Closed Beta Report

Part 13

This week I will not talk about new game features or changes that we implemented, or even problems we discovered. In fact, I will not talk at all this week and thus I am handing over this privilege to Apathy, one of our game masters.

By Game Master Apathy,
Eurocore as a large intergalactic corporation has a lot of ongoing projects and developments, as I’m sure you can imagine. It has a proud history of technological advancement and as such it’s behind the scene’s development and research covers many areas.

Recently there was a slight employment issue that got out of hand. A scientist named Hiro Masi was the head scientist on a chemical development research project, the original goals of the project remain unclear but what the group developed was an extremely powerful and effective new booster.

The group disappeared with the product and the research, and the Core wanted it back. Unfortunately for those involved and the first few customers, the product had some adverse side effects resulting in an untimely death. Eurocore tried to keep this under wraps but it soon became the knowledge of the Global Dominion and ultimately, the clans and rival corporations had an interest in the on going man hunt.

We wanted to create an event in Closed Beta as a test. In the past complaints have been made that events were too scripted and that the players actually had no control over how the story plays out.

To combat this, the majority of information was only given to faction leaders and we left it up to them on how to deal with the situation, we also tried not to force the hand of any factions. We especially did not want to tread on the toes of Eurocore faction leadership.

Finding a fine line between effectively role playing and keeping everyone in the loop of the event is going to be our biggest challenge. For some people the event was over very quickly, and this because it’s the way it played out. A faction did capture the scientists and move them to a more secure location so that’s how the event went, and we had no control over this.

We definitely want to do more of these and we realise we have to work on the development of the events ourselves. I should also make clear that the GM team did not and will not get involved in the main storyline that the players and factions are writing just by their day to day actions, we want to create small side line story events that do not affect the overall political structure.

We hope that those involved had fun.

See you next week.
